Manchester United's Darron Gibson Looks Back On Carling Cup Opportunities

The young Manchester United midfielder is delighted with his progression, and cites Carling Cup opportunities as the catalyst for his continued education...

Manchester United's 4-1 victory over Derby County in the FA Cup was made all the more notable as there were a number of fringe players fielded that would have been more associated with League Cup duty.

Promising midfielder Darron Gibson was one of those utilised from the off, and repaid manager Sir Alex Ferguson's faith in him with some early charging runs, testing shots, and a goal just before the break.

There is no-one more delighted than the player, 21, who believes his outings in the League Cup have been beneficial to his first-team education.

"The Carling Cup has been good for me this year so fingers crossed I will play in the final, but the manager has not told me anything yet," Gibson revealed after the trouncing of the Rams.

"I don't mind playing on the right but central midfield is my proper position.

"I feel more comfortable in there but to be honest, I am just happy to be on the pitch.

"In training I have been working on trying to get into the box and having a few more shots. I am glad I scored but the main thing is we got through."

Gibson is already a full international for the Republic of Ireland, despite featuring for Northern Ireland at under-16 level
