United blow: Rooney hits winner against Wigan but then limps off with hamstring injury

Wayne Rooney's joy quickly turned to agony on Wednesday night after he gave Manchester United a perfect start in their vital Barclays Premier League home game against Wigan.

He scored what turned out to be the only goal of the game in the opening 55 seconds but was forced off after six minutes with a hamstring injury that is set to keep him out for at least three weeks.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson said: 'It is a hamstring injury. That will be about three weeks. We hope it is no longer.'

Rooney put United ahead in the opening minute at Old Trafford but not long afterwards limped to the sidelines and was immediately replaced by Carlos Tevez.

Should his absence run to schedule, Rooney is likely to miss up to five matches, including the Carling Cup semi-final second leg against Derby County next week and the FA Cup fourth round tie against Spurs, plus vital Premier League clashes against Bolton, West Brom and Everton.

However, should the injury prove more serious, he will be a doubt for United's Champions League last 16 encounter against Inter Milan next month, the first leg of which is to be played on February 24.

It is not the only problem United face either as Ferguson reported both Tevez and Jonny Evans completed the game despite taking heavy knocks during the first half that will have to be assessed ahead of Saturday's trip to Bolton.

'Carlos limped through the second half and Jonny limped through virtually the whole game,' revealed Ferguson.

'We will have to assess them and see how they are. We need our best team on Saturday because Bolton are a big side.'
