Match preview - Weds 14th Jan

A look ahead to Wednesday's fixture in the Barclays Premier League.

Manchester United can close to within two points of Barclays Premier League leaders Liverpool as they play the first of their two matches in hand.

Sir Alex Ferguson's men have never lost to Wigan Athletic who visit Old Trafford for a mouth-watering meeting between two in-form sides.

United are looking for a fourth successive Barclays Premier League victory but the Latics can go one better and are aiming for five in a row.

clean sheet

If the Red Devils do not concede, it will be their ninth consecutive Premier League clean sheet, and take them to within one of Chelsea's top-flight record of 10.

United are defending a 100 per cent record against Wigan, having won all six Premier League meetings plus the Carling Cup Final, scoring a total of 22 goals and conceding just three.

Victory will see the champions leapfrog Chelsea into second place and put them just two points behind leaders Liverpool having played one match fewer.

However Steve Bruce's men will be looking to close the gap on sixth-placed Everton to just one point as they chase a possible UEFA Cup slot.

United go into the fixture boosted by Cristiano Ronaldo's award from FIFA as World Player of the Year as the Portuguese star was rewarded for last season's sensational 42-goal haul.

He has currently gone nine matches without scoring and would love to celebrate his trophy by spoiling Bruce's return to his old club.
