FLETCHER: PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE A PLUS

Darren Fletcher believes Manchester United's 10 Premier League title wins can be a major asset in this season's championship chase - by bringing a sense of calm to the stands.

As United look to close the gap on leaders Liverpool to two points by winning the first of their matches in hand against Wigan tonight, Fletcher has revealed what a huge benefit past success can be.

The Scotland international accepts having been there and done it is a major plus for United's players. But the key effect is among the fans.

For, if Liverpool are struggling to score in the final 10 minutes of a game, their supporters, waiting to end a 19-year championship drought might get edgy. The same will not happen at Old Trafford.

"We have the experience of having been there and done it. Liverpool maybe don't and that might bring a bit more pressure," said Fletcher

"But the best thing is the fans have been in this position before.

"They know what it takes to win the Premier League.

"There are times when you have to be patient. The fans understand you have to keep playing the right way and believe that one chance will come."

There have been too many of that type of game for United this season but Sir Alex Ferguson's men have so far come through the tests with flying colours.

Three points this evening, followed by another three at Bolton on Saturday will take the Red Devils top. And some pundits believe United will not be dislodged.

However, with Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra ruled out with back and foot injuries respectively, United's defence is one again stretched to the limit.

And, as Wigan have won on five of their last six outings in the league, Fletcher knows nothing can be taken for granted.

"A lot has been said about the Chelsea game and how much concentration we needed," said the Dalkeith-born star.

"But we need the same concentration in every game. You have to respect your opposition, no matter who it is.

"People have been looking at these games in hand and just counting them as points. But they are not 'givens'. You have to earn the right to win. We are desperate to do that."

With seven wins from seven meetings with the Latics, including a Carling Cup final triumph in 2005 and a title-sealing victory at Wigan last season, United are clear favourites.

But Fletcher feels such a record could be viewed as a double-edged sword. United may be determined to keep it but Wigan will be just as keen to end it.

"There will be no complacency," he said.

"They will be thinking it is about time they got a point against us."
