The European champions have a selection headache of the wrong kind for the trip to Italy.
Sir Alex Ferguson has admitted he is facing an injury crisis ahead of his Champions League tie with Inter on Tuesday night.
The reigning champions are already without Nemanja Vidic, who is suspended, and were handed further bad news as his potential replacement Jonny Evans limped out of yesterday’s 2-1 win over Blackburn Rovers.
Evans joins fellow defenders Gary Neville and Wes Brown on the sidelines, whilst John O’Shea remains a doubt with a heel injury.
That leaves the Red Devils with a problem as to who will partner Rio Ferdinand in the heart of their defence and the United boss admitted it was giving him a headache.
“We are having a nightmare with defenders,” the Scot told the Sunday Mirror.
“I am just hoping to find two who can play on Tuesday.
“Wes Brown and Gary Neville are out and now Jonny looks as if he will miss out.”
Evans will undergo tests today to determine the extent of the injury but is rated as “very doubtful” for the trip to Italy.
Should he miss out the versatile John O’Shea may take his place but he too is struggling and was forced to miss yesterday’s game against Rovers.
That leaves Ferguson with few options for the trip to the Serie A Leaders, aside from 20-year-old reserve team defender James Chester, who is yet to even feature in the Premier League this season.
