Tevez to stay

Deal Me In, Fergie
Carlos Tevez has hit out at claims that he has snubbed a new deal at Manchester United. The Argentina striker insists he wants to stay. Tevez, 24, who was given a week off by boss Alex Ferguson over the New Year, said: “We have not started talks yet. Sir Alex has told me he wants me to remain a United player and that is certainly my desire too. My contract ends in the summer and we have agreed to sit down at the end of the season and discuss a new contract. I have a great relationship with Sir Alex and I hope that will continue.” Tevez’s economic rights are owned by an investment fund headed by Kia Joorabchian. Joorabchian said: “United have indicated they would like to sign Carlos for the long term and he has always said he intends to stay.”

The tabloids all carry reaction from Southampton manager Jan Poortvliet to United's FA Cup third round stroll at St Mary's. The Dutchman claims that referee Mike Riley favoured the Reds, saying: “The referee is always a help for the top teams. Too many decisions went against us, you need neutral people."

Contentious calls aside, the tabloids all concede that United's progress was richly deserved, with Bulgarian striker Dimitar Berbatov singled out for particular praise. "It was Berbatov, ambling about with a studied nonchalance, who epitomised United’s languid dominance," writes the Daily Express' Mick Dennis.

Having eased past the Saints, Tottenham await the Reds in round four. Spurs boss Harry Redknapp won the competition with Portsmouth last season, controversially edging out United, and The Mirror says Sir Alex Ferguson is hoping for a change of fortune this time. "Hopefully Harry won't have the same luck," he says. "If he does, we've no chance."
