Tomasz Kuszczak - The busier of the two goalkeepers by far, Tomasz takes credit for only being beaten by a wonder-strike from Kris Commons.
Rafael - Got forward as and when he could and made a couple of important interventions at the back. Will have learnt a lot from a disappointing performance and result for the Reds.
Nemanja Vidic - United's skipper-for-the-night was forced into a vital clearance after just 2 minutes as Steve Davis threatened to pounce. Alongside Evans, dealt well with the threat of Rob Hulse.
Jonny Evans - Commons' pace caused Jonny a few problems but he combated the experience and physical style of Hulse with courage.
John O'Shea - Had a challenging shift at the back against the Rams' attackers; unlucky not to score at the other end when his shot was brilliantly blocked by Paul Green.
Darron Gibson - Battled well throughout and sent in a couple of good deliveries from the right wing, one in particular almost put Welbeck in.
Paul Scholes - Not at his majestic best, although he twice went close to equalising with trademark strikes from distance.
Anderson - Struggled to stamp his authority in midfield thanks to the constant hussling by Derby's midfield pairing of Addison and Green.
Nani - The Portuguese flyer worked hard on the left flank and cleverly created O'Shea's chance, but his set-piece delivery was sometimes disappointing.
Danny Welbeck - Difficult to assess Danny, given his lack of service from central midfield - only Gibson gave him a sniff with one fizzing cross from the right in the first 45.
Carlos Tevez - Just like Welbeck, was always on the periphery of the game due to poor service from the men behind him.
SUBSTITUTES
Wayne Rooney (for Welbeck, 63) - Worked hard when he came on to try and get his team-mates going, and certainly helped raise the tempo of United's play. But in the end it wasn't to be.
Cristiano Ronaldo (for Scholes, 63) - Ronny returned to action after a four-day break in Portugal and went closest to finding the net with one of his speciality set-pieces which flew inches wide.
Michael Carrick (for Anderson, 74) - Did his best to supply the frontmen with some better service. Was unlucky with a header late on which was straight at Carroll.
