Manchester United Back In For Wilson Palacios?

Fergie seems to have rekindled his interest in the Latics' Honduran star...

The Sun reports that Manchester United are set to make swoop for Wilson Palacios, the Wigan Athletic midfielder, within the next couple of weeks.

The Red Devils inquired about the 24-year-old during the summer, as well as team-mate Luis Antonio Valencia, but both players opted to remain at the JJB for another season at least.

Now, with the winter transfer season well and truly underway, Valencia is courting interest from Real Madrid while Palacios has attracted a number of suitors in England and abroad.

Bayern Munich have been tracking the Honduran international, and Tottenham Hotspur recently had an undiscolsed bid - thought to be around £14 million - rejected by the Latics.

It is understood that Sir Alex Ferguson had hoped to wait until the end of the season before turning his attention to Palacios once more, but the January frenzy surrounding the player could force the United boss to act immediately.

It is unclear where exactly in the Old Trafford club's midfield the former Birmingham City man would fit in, as they already have Paul Scholes, Michael Carrick, Darren Fletcher, Anderson and Owen Hargreaves.

It is possible that Ferguson sees Palacios as a replacement for the latter, as Hargreaves has been dogged by injuries since arriving at United in 2007 and is out for the rest of the campaign after undergoing knee surgery last year.

But while that is nothing more than speculation, Wigan boss Steve Bruce has admitted in the past that a number of top clubs are after his star man - and that he wouldn't stand in the way if one of them made a serious offer.
