Evans: The heat is on

Reds defender Jonny Evans insists the pressure is now on Liverpool after United's last-gasp winner at Bolton on Saturday.

Dimitar Berbatov's 90th-minute header gave Sir Alex's men all three points at the Reebok Stadium, but more importantly sent United to the top of the table.

Liverpool can reclaim top spot on Monday night, but they'll have to win a Mersyside derby to do so.

"The main thing was to go top, keep winning and put the pressure on everyone else," Evans said after the final whistle on Saturday.

"We're top now, which is good for us and puts a bit of pressure on Liverpool. Now they have to go and beat Everton on Monday."

Evans, just 21, has been heavily involved in United's record-breaking run of 10 consecutive clean sheets in the league. One more - the Reds' next league match is against West Bromwich Albion on Tuesday 27 January - will turn a club record into a Premier League record.

"I don’t think anyone realised [we were setting records] until the press started making a deal of it," Evans said. "But it’s nice and there are some good players here. Edwin van der Sar has been fantastic behind the back four: he provides great organisation."

Against Bolton on Saturday, United never really looked like conceding, although the Trotters did occasionally threaten.

"It was tough," Evans insists. "They had a new signing playing up front [Azira Makukula] and he was trying to impress the fans on his debut. He was a big guy."

Now Evans is turning his attention to Tuesday night's Carling Cup semi-final second leg, where the Reds must overturn a 1-0 deficit to reach the final.

"The manager’s given a few players some time off, but not me. It’s nice to be in the team and I’m looking forward to the Derby game. I want to get into my first major final."
