Derby Deserved Bigger Win, Admits Sir Alex Ferguson

Surprisingly, Sir Alex Ferguson has hailed Manchester United's 0-1 defeat to Derby County as 'a fantastic result'.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson admitted he was relieved to only lose 1-0 to Derby County in the first leg of the Carling Cup semi final.

The Red Devils slumped to defeat against the Championship side who were watched by new manager Nigel Clough.

Kris Commons scored the only goal of the game, a fantastic first half strike to hand the Rams victory.

However, speaking to Sky Sports after the game, the United boss admitted his side had got off lightly.

“The positives are we only lost 1-0. It’s a fantastic result for us tonight considering the performance,” said the Scot, “We could have lost four goals, it’s a fantastic result for us and going to Old Trafford will be different.”

The European champions featured a side containing youth and experience with Danny Welbeck, Darron Gibson and Rafael featuring alongside Carlos Tevez, Paul Scholes and Nemanja Vidic.

Yet despite losing the first leg, Ferguson insisted he would still look to his younger players for the second leg in a fortnight’s time.

“We will persevere with the younger players,” explained the United boss, “They were our better players tonight in actual fact.”

Derby dominated the game, creating several chances whereas the Red Devils failed to really test Roy Carroll over the 90 minutes and Ferguson was clearly disappointed with his side’s display.

“I think that we were lucky, we were lucky to only lose 1-0,” he revealed before concluding,”We just didn’t play well. I think that we were over-worried by their crossing and set piece play. I think we looked panicked at the back and didn’t deal with that at all.”
